Eye Tests

Comprehensive and thorough eye tests

Private or NHS, you can trust Haxby Opticians to carry out a thorough eye test and identify any potential problems with your eyes. We offer an OCT scan (as part of the sight test) which produces a 3D image showing the layers and structure of the eye. This gives a more in depth health check compared to the standard 2D image.

Our highly qualified optometrists have many years' experience in undertaking eye tests on people of all ages and are particularly accustomed to carrying out children's eye tests.

Why do I need an eye test?

It is extremely important to have regular eye tests, at least every 2 years, depending on what your optician recommends. Not only is it vital to ensure your eyesight is still up to scratch, but it is also important to check for other health issues. Diabetics and glaucoma sufferers should have an eye test every 12 months.

OCT Scans

We include an OCT scan as part of our private eye examination and it can be included as part of an NHS test for a small fee.  It produces a three dimensional, cross-sectional scan of the back of the eye.  The scan is completely painless, takes a couple of seconds and nothing will touch your eyes during the process.
The scan allows both instant and early diagnosis of several common ocular conditions such as:
  1. Age-related Macular Degeneration
  2. Diabetes
  3. Glaucoma
  4. Vitreous Detachments
  5. Retinal Detachments
  6. Macular Holes
If you have previously been diagnosed with any of these conditions, the OCT scan will allow us to monitor the progression of these closely and can be compared year on year to show even the smallest changes in the eye's health.

Coloured Overlays

This is the second stage, after a full eye examination, in aiding symptoms of visual stress.  If you suffer from visual stress when reading, the symptoms may be reduced using coloured filters or an overlay placed over the text.  Visual stress can affect key aspects of daily life including reading fluency, concentration and comprehension.  The colour of the overlay will be specific to the needs of each individual and can be supplied after an assessment.
If you find using coloured overlays beneficial, you may find precision tinted lenses are helpful too.  These are prescribed as a result of a Colorimetry Assessment.

Colorimetry Assessment for
Visual Stress

Following the successful use of a coloured overlay, the Intuitive Colorimeter can be used to determine a more precise colour for use in spectacles.  The colour found after a Colorimetery Assessment may differ from the overlay colour previously used by a patient.  This is normal, as the precision of colour is not available within the limited selection of overlays.

The examination is performed by a trained Optician who can prescribe precision tinted lenses as appropriate, finding the specific colour for each individual.
